Giving Thanks

Foodbank_trio

On Tuesday, November 18th, WPFF was invited to join a "Friends of the RI Community Food Bank" evening. We toured the facility and got to taste some treats made by one of the Food Bank's head chef,  Heather Langlois.

Did you know that the food bank has a culinary program? It's been in existence for over 10 years and the graduates not only work at some of RI's finest restaurants but  continue to work at the food bank's kitchen where 500 children are fed daily through a program called Kid's Cafe.

After touring the facility, it was not a surprise to read the article in the ProJo about the demand for food higher than the supply. It was evident with the empty shelves.

Recently WPFF has focused on the Food Bank and late this summer we sent over a $1,000 donation to them from the sale of artwork, note cards and prints.

A special thank you to Charlestown Gallery for the reproduction of Shawn's 'Frozen Lemonade' painting and the donation of 100% of proceeds to the Food Bank during their food show in August.

We continued to offer the prints during the Shawn's September Open Studios and at the Taste of RI in Newport this September (see the event and exhibit listings)

Entering our 3rd year of WPFF, as a show of thanks, we're offering bite-sized original food paintings (like the ones above) at a reduced price during the Providence Art Club's annual Little Pictures Show & Sale.

We are most appreciative of your continued support.

Happy Holidays!

Heifer International

Peas
Canned peas, 4x6 inches, acrylic on board, available

Here at WILL PAINT FOR FOOD, supporting hunger relief efforts in our own community is the heart of our mission.

However, we define our community as one that extends to and beyond the geographic boundaries of our home state of Rhode Island.

We are pleased to announce our most recent donation of $600 to Heifer International, an amazing organization working towards a long-term solution to poverty and hunger.

Through Heifer, donor contributions go toward the purchase of animals that can provide food or labor to farmers raising food; as people share their animals’ offspring with others -- along with their knowledge, resources and skills -- an expanding network of hope, dignity, and self-reliance is created that reaches around the world.

This simple idea of giving families a source of food rather than short-term relief caught on and has continued for over 60 years. Today, millions of families in 128 countries have been given the gifts of self-reliance and hope.

Will Paint for Food is proud to support the work of Heifer International.

Your purchase of food-themed artwork or notecards through this site helps support agencies working to end hunger through education, outreach, and food distribution.

Won't you join us?

It's a pretty tasty way to fight hunger.

Around these parts, we're all caught up in the Red Sox and their upcoming trip to the World Series.

Even closer to home, we're excited about upcoming WILL PAINT FOR FOOD events, featuring more of Shawn Kenney's wonderful food paintings. See the latest work at:

PROVIDENCE ART CLUB
Little Pictures Show and Sale
November 18-December 23

Always popular, this "cash and carry" show features small (read: affordable and accessible) works by many of the area's best artists.

Shawn's food-themed paintings are also for sale at the Charlestown Gallery, just a short (and beautiful) ride from Providence.

Boxed sets of 12 note cards, blank inside, can be purchased directly from this site; just click on Buy note cards over there on the right. Note cards make perfect "hostess" or holiday gifts.

And remember, a percentage of every purchase of original works of food-themed art or note cards is donated to a community agency providing hunger relief through education, outreach, or food distribution. We'll be announcing our third-quarter 2007 donation before the end of October.

It's a pretty tasty way to help fight hunger.

A great Open Studios weekend

Dutch oven, 8x10, acrylic on board, available.

Yes, the weather could have been a bit cooler and less humid, but that didn't put a damper on Pawtucket Open Studios weekend. Thanks to a very successful collectors' preview on Thursday night followed by a public preview on Friday night, and then the Saturday and Sunday hours (a veritable marathon of art!), Shawn sold many, many food paintings and food-themed note cards. It was a wonderful show of support for WILL PAINT FOR FOOD, and a testament to the enjoyment people get from having these works in their homes and kitchens.

(Wonderful to note, too, that Shawn's beautiful charcoal drawings were very popular with studio visitors.)

Next month, we will be making our fourth consecutive quarterly donation to an agency working to end hunger.

If you'd like to keep up with WILL PAINT FOR FOOD events and exhibits, please sign up for our mailing list, using the form over there in the middle column. You'll only hear from us when we have something to say.

  • "Geoff flipped when he opened your painting this morning. Just like a kid at Christmas. Sarah and I watched him do circles in the kitchen looking for the right location where he can see your creation ALL THE TIME! Personally, we think he's about to rearrange all of the furniture in the house in search of the perfect 'home' for Tabasco II!" Susan, Providence, Rhode Island
  • "There's simple poetry when art inspired by bountiful food helps to feed real hunger." Mary Harman, Foster, Rhode Island
  • "I love Shawn's work! So far, when I want to buy a piece, it is sold already, so my advice is to jump quickly when you see the perfect piece. I have purchased six boxes of cards, though, and they make perfect hostess gifts, if you can stand to part with them!" Candy Nartonis, Boston
  • "Shawn thinks that he uses an external light source to make his paintings glow. But the truth is, before he even puts brush to paint, his sunny nature seeps onto the panel infusing each subject with light. Then he paints, leaving just enough illuminated to reveal the true nature of the object." Marcia Bowden, Foster, RI
  • "I love to send Shawn's cards; they're beautiful and the recipient learns about Will Paint for Food from the link on the back of the card. It's a great way to spread the word." Lucia, Foster, Rhode Island
  • "Shawn is a fine, keen eyed painter with a heart as big as his talent." Laura Laramie, Glocester, Rhode Island
  • "Have enjoyed the fresh and vigorous style of painting food of Shawn's now for a couple of years and have had the pleasure of gifting several to family and friends with much admiration." Judith Bertozzi, Rehoboth MA
  • "My staff bought me a present last year. A Shawn Kenney painting of a Dunkin' Donuts Great One. It's fabulous. It hangs right near my desk and reminds me every morning to go get one of these giant cups of coffee, not that I need much encouragement. Dunkin' is one of the food groups, right? Thanks, Shawn, for your wonderful work. It is so nice to have such great art in my office, and to help fight hunger at the same time." Ted Chaloner, Boston
