The green days of summer

182111449l_2

Italian pepper, 4x6 inches, acrylic on board, available

August may be a slow time for some, but Shawn Kenney, my collaborator in WILL PAINT FOR FOOD's efforts to raise funds to support hunger relief, is spending the month preparing for Pawtucket Open Studios on September 7-9, 2007.

An avid cook and gardener, Shawn's been going green lately, with new little food paintings of beans, jalapenos, cucumbers, and this amazing pepper. During Open Studios, you'll be able to purchase Shawn's newest food paintings as well as the ever-popular note cards.

Speaking of note cards, there's now an easy interface right on this site to buy note cards using safe and secure PayPal and a credit card. Just click the link for "Buy note cards" to the right of this post, and you'll see all the available boxed collections.

And, as always, a portion of each sale of original artwork and note cards will be donated to organizations helping to end hunger through education, outreach, and food distribution.

It's a pretty tasty way to help end hunger.

Rhode Island Community Food Bank

Treelogo2 We're excited to announce Will Paint for Food's third consecutive quarterly donation to help end hunger. The recipient of a $300 donation from the sale of Shawn Kenney's food-themed original artwork and note cards is the Rhode Island Community Food Bank.

For twenty-five years, the Food Bank has worked to ensure that every Rhode Islander has access to the healthy, nutritious food they need. According to their web site, the Food Bank distributes approximately nine million pounds of food to Rhode Islanders in need through a network of nearly 400 member agencies serving 51,000 adults and children each year.

Will Paint for Food is proud to support the work of our state's largest food distribution program.

Your purchase of food-themed artwork or notecards through this site helps support agencies working to end hunger through education, outreach, and food distribution.

Won't you join us?

It's a pretty tasty way to fight hunger.

Will Paint in Charlestown

Eggplant II, 4"x6" acrylic on board, available

If you can tear yourself away from some of Rhode Island's most beautiful beaches this summer, please stop in to the Charlestown Gallery, 2183 Matunuck Schoolhouse Road in Charlestown, RI (phone 401-364-0120). Owners Renee O'Gara and Dave Gilly Gilstein are showing Shawn's work all summer, and they're generously contributing part of the gallery's commission on each sale to WILL PAINT FOR FOOD.

Next month we'll be making our quarterly donation based on proceeds of sales of paintings and note cards from Shawn's beautiful show at risd/works in Providence, and other sales from April through June. This is the third quarter in a row since the creation of WILL PAINT FOR FOOD that we've been able to make a contribution. How cool is that?

Be sure to keep up with Shawn's painting blog for the latest about the little (and not so little) food paintings and other work.

It's a pretty tasty way to help fight hunger.

Maine Whoopie Pie

125299960l

Shawn & I have always been interested in the local food favorites that people swear by.
The Philly Cheesesteak, Chicago Pizza, Rhode Island's Clamcakes, there’s so many and I think they would make a great series of paintings.
Here’s a little chocolate and cream concoction that belongs to Maine, the Whoopie Pie.
(on ebay it's listed incorrectly as Whoppie...spell check couldn't help)
I’m thinking we should all share in this delight. Up for bid now on ebay,

  • "Geoff flipped when he opened your painting this morning. Just like a kid at Christmas. Sarah and I watched him do circles in the kitchen looking for the right location where he can see your creation ALL THE TIME! Personally, we think he's about to rearrange all of the furniture in the house in search of the perfect 'home' for Tabasco II!" Susan, Providence, Rhode Island
  • "There's simple poetry when art inspired by bountiful food helps to feed real hunger." Mary Harman, Foster, Rhode Island
  • "I love Shawn's work! So far, when I want to buy a piece, it is sold already, so my advice is to jump quickly when you see the perfect piece. I have purchased six boxes of cards, though, and they make perfect hostess gifts, if you can stand to part with them!" Candy Nartonis, Boston
  • "Shawn thinks that he uses an external light source to make his paintings glow. But the truth is, before he even puts brush to paint, his sunny nature seeps onto the panel infusing each subject with light. Then he paints, leaving just enough illuminated to reveal the true nature of the object." Marcia Bowden, Foster, RI
  • "I love to send Shawn's cards; they're beautiful and the recipient learns about Will Paint for Food from the link on the back of the card. It's a great way to spread the word." Lucia, Foster, Rhode Island
  • "Shawn is a fine, keen eyed painter with a heart as big as his talent." Laura Laramie, Glocester, Rhode Island
  • "Have enjoyed the fresh and vigorous style of painting food of Shawn's now for a couple of years and have had the pleasure of gifting several to family and friends with much admiration." Judith Bertozzi, Rehoboth MA
  • "My staff bought me a present last year. A Shawn Kenney painting of a Dunkin' Donuts Great One. It's fabulous. It hangs right near my desk and reminds me every morning to go get one of these giant cups of coffee, not that I need much encouragement. Dunkin' is one of the food groups, right? Thanks, Shawn, for your wonderful work. It is so nice to have such great art in my office, and to help fight hunger at the same time." Ted Chaloner, Boston
